Fear of flying

Some recommendations before your leave

Understanding his fear of flying to overcome it

The fear of flying is divided into four main levels that can reinforce each other:

  • Fear for the crash and die with all the technical aspects (turbulence, failures ...),
  • Poor management of anxiety that results in the "fear of fear" with associated complications weeks before each flight and possibly physiological symptoms (accelerated heartbeat, sweaty palms, anxiety flashes, …),
  • The need for control. In this case is the failure to control the situation or to have the feeling of not being able to act which can be problematic during flight,
  • Other phobias who are unrelated but that prevent to take control of yourself in the aircraft environment: claustrophobia, fear of heights, fear of bacteria, ect...

How to avoid panic attacks and anxiety rushes

All the unpleasant symptoms of anxiety such as accelerated heart rate or the impression of not knowing to control yourself, can be avoided through breathing techniques.

We use a relaxation technique of a computer to see in real time how proper breathing can prevent these anxious situations.

If you recognize yourself in one or more of these three categories of fear (fear of accident, need for control, difficulty managing the anxiety), then the course "Ready for takeoff" is suitable for your case. People after this course achieve improved results regarding fear of flying.

If you only suffer from a specific phobia, you can go seek help at a psychologist in your area for an individual treatment.

How to stop having dark thoughts

Firstly, you must find all the answers to your questions: how is an engine failure treated? How do pilots land in fog? Is turbulence dangerous?

The simulator have a significant effect on the negative thoughts created by the persons, because it won't just give the candidate an answer to the technical questions but also in terms by visual information retrieved from the cockpit.

They are directly processed by the emotional part of the brains like the same way you would fear a horror movie. The flight simulator will leave a positive influence that will remain in your thoughts for your future upcoming real life flights.

Recommedation to better live the experience

It is almost impossible to be reassured only by technical answers when someone fears a plane crash, because it's only rational information, It means that these inputs are less strong for the brain to accept then your personal unpleasant experiences/thoughts or images you have been seeing in the media.

It's for that reason that the statistics show that it all starts from reassuring yourself by reducing the emotional thinking behind all of this. This is why controlled breathing one of the main keys to reassure yourself.

The ideal breathing frequency of 6 breaths a minute will allow you a natural decrease of the hearth rate.

In addition it will help you keep a clear mind and reduce the stimulation of stress hormones in your body as well all the remaining unpleasant symptoms related to anxiety.

If this is uncomfortable for you, expose yourself regularly to the world of aviation before your trips. Go to the airport, watch documentaries about aviation, do some plane spotting ... By means of repeating these events, the brain will assimilate it as if it were normal.

The day you really need to fly, these situations will be less difficult to experience.

When you are inside the airplane don't seek to the triggering of situations, just ignore it.

We always imagine for the worst case scenario then how it is in reality. Look outside of the cabin windows and monitor the acceleration of an airplane which is progressively, the angle of climb isn't that steep as u might think, the feeling from falling out of the sky are most of the time wrong thoughts like when taking the elevator and arriving at the desired floor.

Try to avoid especially sleepless nights and thinking about catching up your sleep during flight. The effect will be the opposite of what you think to do. When the brain is tired, knowledge of the flight will be less available and sudden "forgotten" as the brain is tired and can't think clearly.

Drugs have no effect for over 90% of the cases of fear in flight. They do not change the way of thinking. Alcohol accelerates in turn the heart rate, increases blood pressure and brings a panic attack or triggers anxiety.

Apply the breathing exercises, they have much more effect then chemical substances.

Do not focus on the weather during your journey. The weather that is available to the public, concerns only the situation on the ground and not what is retrieved at the cruising altitudes of aircraft.

L Reliable weather information is available till 18 hours upfront. It means that all the winds and any presence of other weather phenomena like thunderstorms are known.

This information can be predicted even till 15 days upfront the flight. Note that turbulences are unpleasant to experience but they do not bring the aircraft and its occupants in danger!
